HDD recovery and repair

Sometimes the Clients in order to reduce the cost of works say that They don’t need HDD repair and only need to copy the data from it. Unfortunately, it is impossible to carry out data copying without repairing the damaged HDD. Only after proper HDD repair it becomes possible to copy the necessary data.
How we do that (about our methods)
All the work with hermetically sealed blocks of HDD is performed in a specialized “Clean room” to provide high quality HDD recovery.
- Bad-blocks - are fractional damage of HDD magnetic wafer. Due to this damage HDD can not read and save the information to the damaged section. HDD recovery in this case is carried out by the method of sector by sector data copying to another HDD.
- Burning out of electronics board. In this case the HDD engine doesn’t start up and doesn’t give any sound. The electrical breakdown, bad power unit or incorrect connection of HDD power socket may cause such kinds of HDD failures. HDD recovery in this case is carried out by board swapping or repairing of the damaged sectors.
- Jamming of engine bearing. This kind of HDD failures usually occurs to the following HDD brands (models): Seagate Barracuda and Toshiba. The engine shaft doesn’t spin and sounds low and whir. In this case the HDD recovery is carried out by bearing wedging or transposition of magnetic wafers into another correct hermetic block.
- Sticking of head stack. In this case the heads by some reason fail to park on the special ramp. In most cases it occurs to notebook HDD due to notebook drop or shock. Such kind of failure may also occur even without any external action. To repair HDD with such failure the heads are brought back to the parking with the use of special purpose tools and then the heads are being substituted.
- Failure of magnetic-head assembly. In this case HDD is ticking when the damaged head can not find the servo marking and HDD continually parks and unparks the heads. The temporal HDD recovery is carried out in the following way: for data mining, magnetic-head assembly of the damaged HDD is being replaced with another one from another operable HDD and after successful data mining the two HDDs become non-working.
- Failure of magnetic head assembly commutator – There are two types of failures: the first one when the commutator chip plainly fails; the second when commutator fails due to electrical breakdown and it is accompanied with the burning of electronics outboard. The first way to recover HDD is to solder commutator chip all over again by taking it from analogous HDD. The second way is to substitute the whole magnetic head assembly together with the commutator.
